Pygmalion : Rameau in the streets

Pygmalion: Rameau in the Streets takes opera beyond the traditional theatre and brings it into the heart of public spaces, creating a direct encounter with local communities. Inspired by Jean-Philippe Rameau’s work, this immersive production combines Baroque music, urban dance, puppetry and audience participation, transforming streets, squares and everyday spaces into temporary stages.

In this contemporary reinterpretation, the story of Pygmalion becomes a reflection on art, love, our expectations of others, and the transformative power of art. The production breaks down the boundaries between performers and spectators, placing the audience at the heart of the story and offering a direct, spontaneous and unexpected encounter with opera.

Lightweight, mobile and accessible without any prior knowledge of opera, the production is designed to reach a wide range of audiences, including those who may rarely or never attend traditional cultural institutions.

The production premiered in Quebec, presented by Opéra du Royaume, where John La Bouchardière has served as Artistic Director since 2024. It offers a vibrant, contemporary and deeply human way of rediscovering Rameau while bringing opera into the heart of the community.
